Rita: If I get involved in something, it's not as if I sit around and say, Today, I'll make a change. It's an education process. It's a lifestyle attitude you develop. Recently, I read about plastic and researched it a bit, and then I replaced all of our plastic bottles with reusable glass canisters. It took no time before all of us—kids, too—were using them.
Tom: This new attitude has been developing, I think, since when Apollo 8 went to the moon at the end of 1968 and took that first-ever picture of the whole Earth. I remember what an amazing moment that was for everybody, seeing this blue and white ball. So that's what it looks like, I thought. It felt almost chromosomal: We could see we were limited, that there was not an infinite amount of everything. And that we'd better not waste anything.
