The Environmental Working Group just released a new study confirming previous research showing that toddlers have higher levels of toxins in their bodies than their mothers. The EWG found that the children in their study, on average, carried more than 3 times the amount of flame retardants in their blood than their mothers.  Watch coverage on The Today Show or read the full EWG report, Fire Retardants in Toddlers and Their Mothers.

So what can you do? Avoid PBDEs in electronics and foam. Tips from the EWG:

It kills germs and brightens whites, but that’s just the beginning of the wondrous powers of white vinegar.  Traces of vinegar have been found in Egyptian urns from 3000 BC, so it’s no wonder that over time we’ve found so many uses for it.

24 million children ride on school buses for an average of an hour and a half every school day. It’s convenient and it’s safe, but old diesel buses spew a lot of nasty air pollution. And it’s not just bad for the air quality around the bus, it leaks inside the bus where developing lungs are exposed to it the entire ride.

Like every other mid-August since I was six years old, I feel like summer has disappeared in the blink of an eye. My daughters see the displays at stores and ask when we’re going to go school supply shopping. I’ve been putting them off in order to find the greenest products I can. Like most other Americans, I’m trying to balance the rising price of food and fuel with seasonal needs like back-to-school supplies. Our friends at CHEJ have just published a great guide to help you send your kids off to school PVC-free! The guide lists the most common back-to-school supplies made out of polyvinyl chloride (PVC or vinyl) plastic and safer PVC-free alternatives.

When PVC is manufactured or burned, numerous dioxins are formed and released, a highly toxic group of chemicals that can cause cancer, harm the immune and reproductive systems. Our bodies are contaminated with these and other chemicals released during the PVC lifecycle. This may pose irreversible life-long health threats.
