Many cotton garments are first bleached white before they are dyed another color, either with chlorine or hydrogen peroxide. And dioxin, a carcinogen and possible hormone disrupter, is produced and released into the environment during chlorine bleaching of cotton.

Since we posted the discussion about the benefits of CFL’s, we have received a lot of questions about the mercury in CFL's. Specifically, there has been some concern over the possibility that broken CFLs can be an important source of exposures to mercury, a toxic metal and a key component of compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFLs).
