A Blog Carnival in Your Backyard!

Healthy Child
Thursday, July 01, 2010

We’re excited to announce the creation of the Healthy Child Blog Carnival. In an effort to help build the movement to protect children from harmful chemicals, we’ll be hosting this monthly Carnival highlighting the many ways each and every one of you are creating healthy environments for children.

What is a Blog Carnival? and Where Do I Sign Up?!

With so much out there on the web, finding the good stuff on certain topics can be a challenge. A blog carnival is a collection of community blogs on a particular subject—sort of a potpourri of individual voices all in one arena.

Each month a topic is announced, giving you an opportunity to write a piece with your own personal spin. We will collect the pieces, and feature the carnival at the end of the month!

This month's topic is "Splendor in the Grass: Greener Gardens, Yards and Outdoor Spaces." (See Chapter 6 of the Healthy Child book to get ideas.) Please submit your posts related to protecting children from toxic chemicals in the great outdoors, whether it's your hunt for an effective but safe insect repellant or sunscreen, taming weeds without toxic chemicals, your non-chlorinated pool, or organic gardening. You don't need to have a backyard to take part: write about your public pool, your local playground, camping - get creative! Just remember that whatever topic you choose, you need to address how you are protecting children from toxic risks (not simply being "green" or getting in touch with nature).

How to Participate

  • Original Posts: Write and publish on your blog an original post on the topic, then fill out the form at the bottom of this post with your information by 11:59 PM PST Wednesday, July 14. We will review all submissions and publish a post on our blog that links to all accepted articles on Tuesday, July 20.
  • If you don't have a blog, you can still join in the fun. We'll create a thread on our Facebook wall on July 20 where you can add your own composition.

We will promote the Carnival on our blog, Facebook page and via Twitter.

  • Twitter: Beginning July 20, we will tweet headlines and links of the Carnival submissions using the hashtag #healthychild. If you use Twitter, we'd love for you to spread the love and retweet these.
  • Facebook: Beginning July 20, we'll be sharing excerpts of Carnival submissions on our Facebook page. If you use Facebook, we ask that you share these on your wall.

Guidelines

  • We are creating Healthy Child Carnival Badge but it won't be ready till later in the month. In the meantime, when you post your Carnival piece please include our logo in your submission.
  • Please include this line in your post: "This is part of the Healthy Child Blog Carnival (link to http://www.healthychild.org) - an effort by Healthy Child Healthy World to help inspire a movement to protect children from harmful chemicals."
  • Please write on topic.
  • Please use your post to share what you do to protect your (and all) children from toxic chemicals in the great outdoors.
  • Please don't use your post to criticize others.
  • Please refrain from using profanity.
  • Please don't use your post to promote your product or brand.
  • Please keep your post positive.
  • We will link to posts that meet these guidelines. If your post is off-topic, we will let you know if time allows.
