A Happy (and SAFER) HoLEADays Season โ€“ New Video!

Christopher Gavigan
Monday, November 12, 2007

This season, our friends at the Sierra Club released a new holiday video animation (quite entertaining) to combat lead toys - 'Spacey the Lead Elf' urges parental vigilance, governmental action and to raise awareness about the threats to our children's safety.

Award-winning animated political cartoonist Mark Fiore designed the "Spacey the Lead Elf" animation, which brings to mind the more than 70 product recalls of nearly 10 million items so far in 2007.

"We need more inspectors in the field and more testing of the products we buy for our children," said Ed Hopkins, Sierra Club Environmental Quality Program Director. "We need a stronger Consumer Product Safety Commission with the tools it needs to protect our kids."

Lead can affect the brain development of young children and has been directly linked to a wide range of learning disorders. While lead paint in older homes is the major cause of childhood lead poisoning, many children are also being exposed to toxic lead through the toys they love and the products they use. More than 300,000 American children have blood levels high enough to cause irreversible damage, according to the Centers for
Disease Control. Every one of these cases is avoidable.
