  • Hair Dye

French Consumer Reports identifies the safest and most effective hair dye. Using the standards of the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (CSSC) of the European Union (a much more stringent system than our own regulators use), each product was evaluated for: potential irritation, sensitization, mutagenic risks, and carcinogen and reproductive toxins. A natural product was not only judged fully acceptable for long-lasting natural color – it was the only one that received an acceptable safety rating. (Good news – it’s a product made in the US!) • Egg Dye

The Art of Making Egg Dye. A seasonal tradition for many families, this year opt for DIY dye made from foods instead of artificial commercial dyes.

  • Food Dye

Learn more about artificial food dyes during a live chat. Research is mixed over whether synthetic food dyes can affect some children’s behavior. Though the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) won't be putting labels on foods containing the dyes any time soon, more research is warranted, according to a federal advisory panel. But is this the end of the story? Why did the FDA hold the recent hearing? And why has Europe required warnings on some foods that contain dyes? Join the LA Times at noon CT (1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. PT) on Tuesday, April 12, for an hour-long chat about the food dye and hyperactivity controversy, with Chicago Tribune health reporter Julie Deardorff and panelists Michael Jacobson and Dr. Keith-Thomas Ayoob.

Worried About Food Dyes? Here are 4 Tips to Avoid Them.

Also, if you're concerned about risky artificial food dyes, please sign our petition telling Kraft to stop using them! They have in other countries due to consumer pressure, now it's our turn to make them clean up their colors.

exactly Mandy (see my comment below)—with just some quick searching, I’ve found actnaturals.com and actbynature.com which seem promising. There are probably others too.

Yet on Skin Deep, all Herbatint products rate an 8!

I think I’ll go with Tints of Nature or Colora, thanks…

Does anyone know what the other two natural hair color brands (besides Herbatint) that were reviewed and tested by the French Consumer Reports?  Is the actual report posted somewhere?

Thanks for this summary Healthy Child. Love the site and great info in general. One comment on the hair dye news clip: Herbatint may be better than most, but still uses p-phenylendiamine (PPD) as the main active ingredient. PPD is a known carcinogen and gets the EWG’s highest toxicity rating (10 out of 10). So I personally would still look for PPD-free alternatives. There are a small number of PPD-free permanent hair colors out there. See greenscientist.ca (a work in progress) for more details on PPD and why it’s not a good thing.
