Book Review - Anna Getty’s Easy Green Organic

Last night, I cooked a delicious dinner in under 30 minutes. Let me rephrase: I cooked a sophisticated, fresh, unbelievably healthy dinner in under 30 minutes. Barbeque Baked Alaskan Salmon, with Garlicky Bok Choy and Quinoa. And yes, it tasted absolutely as delightful as it sounds. My feeling of accomplishment soared, and I asked myself why I wasn’t cooking like this every single night?

Luckily, I’m confident last night’s success won’t be just a one-off, fluke event, but a nightly re-occurrence. My sensai on this journey to quick and healthy meals is Anna Getty, and the tool is her fabulous new cookbook, “Anna Getty’s Easy Green Organic”.

Anna Getty has long been gently nudging American families back into the kitchen. Her goal is to reconnect us to our food source so that we rediscover the amazing power eating healthfully exerts over our health, our happiness, and our longevity. She believes firmly that much illness and malcontent could be avoided if not for our addiction to a diet of cheap, over-processed, sugar and salt-laden foods, and if our culture valued cooking and dining together as a family. She adds to that stark reality, the tremendous weight our agro-industrial system puts on the planet. Anna charges us all to take our kitchens back into our own hands – for the sake of our health, and for the preservation of the Earth.

Her book is neither a lecture nor a polemic, but it is a lifestyle. In Anna’s words, “Empower yourself through your kitchen and the food you prepare.” She takes a measured approach at first, offering background on our modern food system and laying out the case for organic, green cuisine. This is very educational, and practical – tips on how to decifer labels, prioritize organics, and reduce packaging and waste. But the heart of the book truly lies in her original, creative recipes, the full success of which depends on how deeply your embrace the whole lifestyle. Starting with toxic cookware and sustainability in the kitchen, through composting and harvesting an organic herb garden, Anna makes it simple (and enticing) to begin the process and encourages the reader to take it step by step, meal by meal.

And, oh, the recipes. Anna’s collection reflects her many cultural inspirations and passion for global cuisine, which she stokes by constant travel. Cooking your way through the book takes you across the world - Indian curries, hearty Japanese miso, playful spins on American classics, Mediterranean pastas and soup, Greek salads, and Provencal-style chicken. Each recipe I tested was a delight, relying on the marriage of the fresh, inventive flavors instead of my laborious prep-time.

The tag line to the title of the book is “Cook Well – Eat Well – Live Well”. With Anna’s excellent cookbook to guide you, her mantra can easily become your reality.
