USA Today Takes on Plastics

Healthy Child
Wednesday, October 31, 2007

Yesterday, USA Today published an article about the potential dangers of chemicals used in plastics. More and more, parents are alarmed about the dangers in baby bottles and plastic toys that come into contact with their children's fragile, developing body.

Exposure to Bisphenol A and phthalates, which you can find in many plastic items, can cause a variety of problems: earlier sexual maturation in females exposed before birth, breast cancer, lowered sperm production, possible links to prostate cancer and increased insulin resistance, and for being a precursor to diabetes. Research on the effects on rodents has evidenced this.

The article states that using Born Free Bottles is one healthy choice you can make to avoid these harmful chemicals.  Be wise with plastics and keep an eye out for products that are  "bisphenol A-free" and "phthalate-free".

On October 14th, 2007 Govenor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed the Toxic Toys bill AB1108, banning toys containing phthalates and BPA,  and nowCalifornia will lead the country in this effort in the wake of the European Union and many other countries in banning the use of six phthalates in children's products and toys.

Under the law, any product made for young children that contains more than one-tenth of 1% of phthalates cannot be sold or distributed in California beginning in 2009.
