Healthy Child
Sunday, June 13, 2010
Sippy cups, car seats, high chairs, cribs, lunch boxes, teethers – the list of gear you need to raise kids these days can seem daunting. Especially with headlines about BPA in plastics and toxic flame retardants in crib mattresses. Have no fear, we’re here to help!
Join us this Thursday, June 17th at 6 pm PST/9 pm EST when we’ll be talking about safer gear. Our special guests will be Jeremiah and Jennifer McNichols from Z Recommends. Z Recommends has been cited by the Washington Post, USA Today, and the Sierra Club for its consumer research and reporting, and is best known by parents and bloggers for its thorough product reviewing as well as its consumer advocacy on issues central to parents’ concerns for the health and safety of their children.
They are also the brains behind the ever useful ZRecs Guide. The ZRecs Guide collects information about potentially harmful chemicals in a wide range of baby products based on company reporting. The Guide currently covers BPA, phthalates, formaldeyhde, triclosan, flame retardants, PEGs, latex, lead, parabens, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) in baby bottles, sippy cups, teethers, pacifiers, sleepwear, bath products, bath toys, bottle sterilizers, breastfeeding aids, food storage, infant formula, lunch boxes and bags, outdoor play items, straw cups, sunscreen, utensils, kids’ cosmetics, and infant toys.
We'll learn about:
- Some of the main toxics in kids gear
- How to find safer gear
- Tips for finding safer stuff on a budget
