FDA Decision on BPA is Not in Best Interest of Children

Christopher Gavigan
Tuesday, August 19, 2008

Our community of scientists, physicians, and children's health advocates is rightly upset today. The Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) announcement that bisphenol A – the hormone disrupting chemical found in numerous consumer products including can linings and baby bottles – is "safe."

There is no doubt that, in numerous independent laboratory studies, the pervasive chemical has been linked to obesity, developmental problems, diabetes, risk for heart attack, and several types of cancers including breast and prostate cancer.

Click here to read the Press Release by our broad based coalition.

As I said in the release: "The FDA is bowing to the chemical industry's influence, and trying to convince the American public that this chemical is OK. There is clear and credible evidence, and more scientific studies, showing links to the very health effects we see on the rise today."

The big question is when will we be able to depend on our government to err on the side of caution when it comes to human health?

I think the answer to the “big question”, at least for the FDA, is NEVER.  I did a blog on the accompanying Andy’s Take, wherein the Commissioner for Foods & Drugs compares the BPA issue to global warming, and yet says that the FDA is doing the right thing.  Check it out.
