Trying to find seafood that is good for your health and for the planet? Need some new recipes to make it taste great, too? Then check out The Fish and Tips Guide from our friends at Food & Water Watch, a non-profit organization that advocates for safe food and clean water.
At a time when concerns with food safety are becoming increasingly common and climate change and overfishing are affecting the long-term health of our oceans, knowing where seafood comes from and how it is produced is very important.
The fish for the cookbook were selected based on three categories:
• healthiness for people – meaning they are less likely to have contaminants, antibiotic residues and disease;
• healthiness for the environment – meaning they are fished or farmed sustainably; and
• healthiness for local economies – meaning they are produced domestically.
Food & Water Watch held a “Get Cookin!” contest to gather ideas from people all over the country for preparing sustainable seafood. I’m happy to report that these recipes are as appealing to the palate as they are to the conscience. Squid risotto, Lebanese Scallop Salad, Lemon Pepper Mahi Mahi with Green Onions and Garlic Butter, anyone? Delicious! There are so many amazing options.
In addition to these mouth-watering recipes, there is a glossary of fish lingo and seafood substitutions to modify them for all tastes and needs. And true to form, the guide is loaded with consumer information about safe fish practices and purchasing.
So, save this incredible resource on your desktop for quick access when its time to head to the market. For more information, visit Food & Water Watch.
