Healthy Byte: Veggie and Fruit Washes

Healthy Child
Monday, May 03, 2010

Sometimes using water to wash your fruits and vegetables is not enough. Especially, when you are not able to buy organic and use conventionally grown produce.

But there is an easy and inexpensive solution. You can make your own vegetable and fruit wash by mixing one part water with one part vinegar (white or cider vinegar). For better results follow with a Hydrogen Peroxide wash.

NOTE: Do NOT mix hydrogen peroxide with vinegar. They will react.

Yosefa ~ We will have to agree to disagree. I have not been sick once in 5 years, since I started eating huge amounts of healthy foods and got off the idea that over sanitizing and the traditional lifestyle are good.

I have my own garden which I grow organically and put love into and/or buy food from local organic farmers I trust. Sad that it is assumed I got my produce “from G-d knows where”.

But separately ~ I think the problems we are facing with health these days are far bigger than dirt or coughs. My immune system ~ and everyone’s ~ should be strong enough that someone somewhere having coughed near my food does not cause me to be sick.

Eva - I think eating unwashed produce is way too risky.  Most of the health scares from deadly bacteria in the last couple years from spinach to scallions and cucumbers has come from organic farms.  The idea that it’s organic so you don’t have to wash it is ridiculous.  You’d be better off just eating a little dirt with your food rather than eating organic produce that has been shipped, stored G-d knows where, and touched and breathed on by lots of people.  Organic doesn’t mean no one smoked in the vicinity or coughed on your food.

Nice video.  I use vinegar for lots of cleaning.  It took my husband a while to get used to the scent, instead of the toxic “lemon fresh” chemicals, but it works!  I think it gets the grime off my bath tub better than standard chemicals, and when I soak my lettuce in cold water and vinegar it crisps back up!

Nutrition Diva says elbow grease is more important that any washes because those little guys like salmonella burrow and really hang onto the surface.

As far as the washes found in stores - if you like the bottle, buy it.  But you are mostly paying for the bottle.

Don’t forget about creating healthy intestinal flora ~ the chemicals are not so great ~ but the bacteria found on unwashed organic produce is healthy for our immune system!

I’m also curious about the studies. I’ve seen this method mentioned all over the net, but I haven’t seen any proof.

Thanks!

I’m curious about the studies that were mentioned in regards to this method. Do you have any source that you can share? Thanks

What do you all think about the veggie washes you can buy in the store?

Do you even wash strawberries and blueberries with this wash?
