Top Tips

• Green Mom Review offered two sites this week for non-toxic, green shopping: Lolababiez Organics sells everything from organic baby clothes to BPA free bottles, pacifiers, and teethers, and Noplastic.ca offers countless stainless steal alternatives to your everyday plastic products.

Salvation Army stores across the country are stocking only lead-free toys. After being criticized for regularly selling toys that had been recalled and failed to meet safety standards, the Salvation Army has cleared each of its stores of all potentially hazardous playthings.

• A mom tests eco-friendly sunscreens and picks her favorite.

Recent Research

Gas appliances may affect kids’ brain development. A study of Spanish preschoolers has shown that those exposed to gas appliances from birth have lower average scores on tests of memory, language, attention, and other cognitive tests. Researchers have recommended that parents protect their children from such exposure by using proper ventilation for their gas appliances and keeping children out of the kitchen while the stove is in use.

• In Sweden, a new study reveals that levels of PCBs and other toxic substances present in women's breast milk have declined since the middle of the 1990s. The amount of PCB in the breast milk of mothers who gave birth between 1996-2006 declined by between 4-9% each year. This is exciting news, indicating that Sweden's "ban on chlorine bleaching of paper and other measures to eradicate chlorine pollutants from the environment seem to have paid off."

In the News

• President Obama has allotted 100 million dollars in the stimulus package to removing lead-based paint from lower income housing nationwide. This includes eradicating molds, mildew, dust mites, and pests, mainly in families with children under the age of six.

Disney Studios in Burbank, California has allegedly been contaminating groundwater for decades with toxic chemicals from their cooling system. Environmental World Watch Inc. and several Burbank homeowners have filed lawsuits against the studio, accusing them of allowing their runoff to flow into the Los Angeles River and neighborhood curbside drains, putting underground drinking water supplies in danger of contamination.

Thanks so much for these great snippits of information!  That’s great news about the Salvation Army - I was wondering if there had been any sort of screening process for the items they receive.  Thanks again!

Reading this post reminds me why I got involved with a No Salt Water Softener company in the first place. It is amazing what we do to Mother Nature!
