I Confess, I Used To Be A Junk Food Junkie

Food For Thought

by Anh Van Nguyen, Communications & Programs Coordinator, Healthy Child Healthy World

Before joining the Healthy Child staff, I have to admit that I was not much of a healthy eater. Eating organic to me meant diets filled with tasteless dishes at best and cardboard-like substances at worst. Thanks, but no thanks. But with the slew of information I’ve learned at Healthy Child, I can no longer pretend that the greasy, fatty foods I consume don’t have adverse effects on my body.

That’s why I was ecstatic when I was given the opportunity to review Anni Daulter’s The Organic Family Cookbook. The stunning photography first drew me in, and the way she weaved heartwarming stories about her family into each recipe kept me reading. Anni’s love for her family is echoed throughout the book. Needless to say, I was excited to see how her recipes tasted.

The recipe that first caught my attention was her Refreshing Fall Persimmon Pomegranate Salad, mainly because at the moment, my mom’s persimmon trees are abounding with the fruit and I was in need of some creative things to do with them. The flavors of each autumn fruit complemented each other very well, and the addition of mint made it especially refreshing. Anni even included a side note on how to make persimmon tea, a welcomed concoction in this chilly weather! Yum!

I also tried her Udon Noodles with Soybeans and Carrots recipe for a quick and simple dinner. I had some packaged udon noodles lying around that I’ve been meaning to cook and this seemed like the perfect time. I was not disappointed in the least! This is organic eating? I should’ve started a long time ago! I’m dying to try the Triple Berry Cream Cheese Tarts for the next baking night with my sisters.

Anni Daulter is an eco-mama, professional cook, and advocate for sustainable living. On top of all that, she is also a Healthy Child Healthy World Healthy Eating Expert. We know how important your children’s eating habits are. That’s why, among the resources we provide, our Eat Healthy program has a yummy collection of recipes that are healthy and kid approved (including recipes from Anni!).

We’ve also recently partnered with Foodily.com, a social recipe website that brings together a continuous feed of recipes catered to users’ tastes and preferences. When you join Foodily, you will be given options of other users to follow, much like Facebook - and we’re one of the featured recipe curators, so connect with us!

As a newly self-proclaimed foodie, I’ve been having a great time perusing recipes that come across my feed. That’s how I found this Persimmon Salsa that was a hit with the staff at the office. Join us on Foodily! We’ll be choosing daily recipes that we like, and give suggestions on how you can Clean It and Green It, to make some of your favorite recipes healthy for your families.

Here’s a little more to chew on!

The current development of organic food and the rise of various organic markets means that we can choose from a wide variety of healthy products which makes the transition to eating bio food much easier. As for me, I am a great fan of organic meat which I always buy at a farmers market. I was lucky to find a few of them such as The Healthy Butcher, Fresh From the Farm, Cumbrae’s in Toronto where you can get healthy and high-quality meat which not only eases your conscience as far as the treatment of animals is concerned but it also has a much more positive impact on your health and lifestyle. So I am looking forward to find some new bio recipes on the websites you mention.
