Industrial Pollution Doesn’t Have to Start in the Womb

Environmental Working Group
Saturday, February 28, 2009

LISA FRACK:  As a reader of this blog, you probably know that in today’s world, industrial pollution starts in the womb. But it doesn’t have to.

The Kid-Safe Chemicals Act is likely to be re-introduced in Congress this Spring. It would overhaul our current ineffective national chemical policy, the Toxic Substances Control Act, which hasn’t been updated since it was enacted in 1976. If you missed the February 19th Green Grapevine conference call on Kid-Safe, you can catch the podcast here.

And while there are a bundle of non-profit environmental organizations working hard to pass this legislation - including Healthy Child Healthy World and the Environmental Working Group (EWG) - citizen voices will make all the difference. Really. You’re that powerful.

So jump in! Let's partner up and pass the Kid-Safe Chemicals Act. Just like that. How? So glad you asked! You can:

Sign The Declaration against pre-polluted babies and for a stronger law.
Host a house party. We'll provide all the materials you need. Check it out in the Take Action section of our Kid-Safe web page
• Spread the word! Blog about it. Tweet about it. Tell your Facebook friends about it. It may seem small, but if we all do our own little part, it's suddenly not so small. Many voices acting in concert can accomplish a great deal.
Sign onto our letter of support if you're affiliated with an organization. Lots already have, but the more the merrier.
• Get in touch to talk about how we can partner where you live. Email Lisa at the Environmental Working Group at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

Feeling inspired? Thinking that the solution is in your hands? That's because it is. Join us to pass Kid-Safe, and together we will improve the environmental health of all Americans. Because if not now, then when? And if not you, then who?

I really appreciate that the Act has been passed as it was really needed to keep the child safe.

I believe that conventional medical resources should stop sticking their collective heads in the sand. Kids should be tested for metal toxicity at least once in their early years.

Its a good thing that the 1976 law is being updated but considering the powerful lobbyiests in Washington then it will probably be a toothless update with tons of loopholes and parts that will not go into effect for decades. The best thing this country can do for itself would be to ban lobbyism entirely and ban any and all “gifts” to politicians. After that, then ban any politican for life from politics who votes “yes” for a budget that results in a deficit.

I’ve been receiving EWG’s emails for quite some time.  I will write letters.  Thanks for the heads up.  I tried to find the “host a party” information, and I can’t find it?

This sort of thing scares me.  If we cannot protect our children, what can we protect? :(

Now a days there is more pollution and The Kids Safe Chemicals Act is more necessity to come in act.  All must join together to pass Kids Safe and improve environmental health.

I think this is a great idea, and I am 100% sure in some years into the future they are going to find out that autism and other disorders that have skyrocketed in the past 25 years are going to be tied to such chemicals.

Keep fighting the good fight!

The Kid Safe Chemicals Act is not a chemical-by-chemical or specific product policy. You can learn more comprehensive information about it at www.ewg.org/kidsafe.

Thanks!

Would the manufacturing of PVC be included in the Kid’s Safe Chemical Act? How many homes have PVC pipes? Floors? Blinds? Wallpaper? Getting rid of the chemicals would be a half step unless we do something about toxic plastics.

I have been a CHEC supporter for years. We just found out that my 9 year old daughter has cadmium toxicity and I am taking her to a DAN! specialist tomorrow. This toxicity likely began when she was 18 months old, and I have been begging the medical community to help us since then. We need tougher environmental standards for sure. I also believe that conventional medical resources should stop sticking their collective heads in the sand. Kids should be tested for metal toxicity at least once in their early years. Especially if their parents are constantly telling doctors that there is something wrong. I hope that it is not too late for my daughter.

I have a team of over 400. I will send this information to them. Thanks for all that you do to help our children live healthier lives.

I am happy to see a grass roots lobby forming on this issue.  I will contact Lisa at the Environmental Work Group to find out how I can get involved and take action.
