Its a David and Goliath Battle: Please Help TODAY!

Healthy Child
Monday, July 06, 2009

Bills banning BPA and brominated flame retardants have been passing across the country because people like you have been pressuring lawmakers to protect children from toxic chemicals. As would be expected, the chemical industry is none too pleased and is pulling out all the stops to protect their profits.

Don’t let them get away with it.

Today’s spotlight battle is happening in California where two bills are making their way through the halls of the legislature. Both will have hearings tomorrow and both are facing tough opposition due to the disingenuous tactics being used by the chemical industry.

Please help by contacting Assembly Members today and spreading the word to others you know in California. Every voice counts!

Here are the details about the bills that need support and the officials that need to hear from you:

#1 - SB772 will stop the use of toxic fire retardants in the polyurethane foam in baby products including cribs, changing tables, strollers, playpens, high chairs. The same chlorinated tris that was removed from use in children’s pajamas thirty years ago is now used in California and also across the U.S and Canada in baby products due to an antiquated California regulation.

Compared to most California toxics bills that impact one chemical only in one state, SB772 would stop the use of the use of high levels of many toxics in many baby products in all states and Canada. SB772 would get rid of an unnecessary regulation that has not been shown to protect our children from fires and does expose them to high levels of toxic chemicals. This excellent legislation will protect our children’s health and maintain fire safety. It is now meeting brutal opposition from the bromine industry.

SB772 will have a critical hearing on Tuesday July 7th at the CA Assembly Business and Professions Committee. Please contact members below to express your position and fill in this form to send an automated message.

#2 – SB797, the Toxics-Free Babies and Toddlers Act, will virtually eliminate BPA from food and beverage containers for children under 3 years old.

Millions of babies and toddlers in California are being exposed daily to the harmful toxin BPA. This hormone-disrupting chemical can be found in baby bottles, food and beverage containers and formula containers and is leaching into their food and drink. While some manufacturers have already removed this substance from their products, it is still found in a wide variety of products.

SB797 would limit the amount of BPA allowed to leach from baby bottles, sippy cups, infant formula cans and baby food jars. Specifically, the bill would prohibit the manufacture, sale, or distribution of these products designed for children three years old and younger that contains more than 0.1 parts per billion (ppb) of BPA.

SB797 will have a hearing on Tuesday July 7th at the CA Assembly Health Committee. Please contact members below to express your position.
