Healthy Child:
We’re co-hosting an “Easy Organic Living” community group on Baby Center and one of the hot topics among the moms there is organic meat - specifically, how to buy it on a budget. We invited frugal mom Valerie Deneen to offer some expert advice and here’s what she recommends:
For deals on organic meats, here are a few tips to keep in mind....
- Local Farmers Market -- If you are having a hard time finding organic meat at your local grocery stores, you may have better luck at your local farmers market. If you're looking for deals in your area, I would start here.
- Manager's Special -- Ask the butcher at your grocery store about the mark-down schedule for the organic meats. This has proven to be very helpful for our family. For instance, usually the day before the sell-by date, they may be marking down the meats to half-price! Which leads to my next tip....
- Find a Deal & Freeze It -- If you are able to find a good deal on organic meat, you may want to stock up, and freeze it for later use.
- Go Meatless a Few Times a Week -- Our family goes meatless a few times a week, as a way to buy less, but better quality meat.
- Choose Cuts with Little/No Waste -- Another tip for saving money on organic meat is to only buy what you think you will use, and choose cuts with little or no waste, such as ground beef, skirt steak, or london broil. Whole organic chickens are often much cheaper than buying packages of boneless, skinless chicken breasts.

People have been eating meat since the beggining of time in one form or anpther and it has been a part of most cultures on the planet. As humans we were not designed to be vegetarians. Kids need heapthy protein and if you educate yourself a little you will find that there are plenty of ranchers who still raise organic pasture fed cattle and poultry in very humane ways and lean protein is a very necessary part of a growing child’s diet. If you choose to be a vegetarian that’s fine but a growing child has different nutritional needs than you. And if you think loading up your child with tofu (aka soy) is healthy, please do some research. Soy mimics estrogen in the body and no boy or girl wipl benefit from added hormones…

The many health/planet issues concerning meat I believe should be addressed more to the public, but I apologize, I didn’t mean to come off as attacking anyone and was out of line. It is something to remember that there are real people behind the computer screens sometimes 0_o

@Michelle that’s exactly how I feel. On my site I try to get people to understand that not everyone is going to be “green” 365 days a year, 24hrs a day. However, if you make little changes they add up to bigger ones.
People should not be ridiculed or attacked for doing something that is considered better for the environment than the latter, because at least they are doing something.
Isn’t that the goal, to have more people doing something, rather than a few people doing everything? =]

The fact is people are still going to eat meat whether it is bad for the environment or not. At least healthy child, healthy world is writing about the healthier alternative to helping those families save money. Thanks

Thank you for this article. I have shared it with my followers. I am sure that there are a lot of non-vegetarians/non-vegans that will appreciate the effort you put into finding the “greener” choice of meat for a cheaper price.
Bravo!

If you did a little research on where your meat comes from and the awful abuse these animals go through silently everyday-organic or not- you would think twice about what you are really feeding your children.
I am suprised that this website that is for healthy children and planet would be supporting the use of meat. Look up all the studies linking animal foods to cancer, obesity, heart disease, etc. Factory farming agriculture is also destroying our planet far more quickly than anything else.

I eat true range fed beef in Colorado and raised in Wyoming and know the ranchers. They choose not to go through the hassle and expense of certifying they are organic. Did you know that true range feed beef is higher in omega-3 fatty acids than fish? It is feeding grains to cattle in feedlots that makes their fats unhealthy for consumption.
Also, outfits like Whole Foods, who market range fed beef actually buy beef that is fed organic corn before slaughter.
By the way, if beef is fed corn I have an allergic reaction to it. More than that, if I merely smell corn fed beef cooking I have an allergic reaction. I am a trained immunologist - toxicologist and it took 11 years to figure this out.
