October is Children’s Health Month and You Can Win a Prize!

The US Environmental Protection Agency celebrates Children's Health Month each October by developing publications and activities that highlight the importance of protecting children from environmental risks.

This year’s highlights include:

• The launch of the Climate Change and Children’s Health Education Campaign, which will encourage middle school and high school students to take actions to address global climate change and children's health, and encourage their friends and families to do the same.
• The release of the 2008 Children's Environmental Health Report, the eighth in an annual series highlighting EPA work to protect children from environmental risks.
The October Calendar, with a children’s environmental health tip for every day in October.

This year, we’ve developed our own calendar of extremely do-able tips that still having the potential for big impact. They range from greening your house and improving nutrition to getting civically engaged and reducing energy use to prevent global warming.
We challenge you to do as many of our tips as possible. Download it now!

The first week of November, respond to this blog with the answers to the following three questions:

1. How many days of the month did you follow the tip?
2. Which were your favorites?
3. Which ones didn’t you do and why?

Everyone who submits answers will be entered into a drawing to receive an as of yet, undefined prize. Maybe a copy of our new book Healthy Child Healthy World: Creating a Cleaner, Greener, Safer Home, maybe a gift from one of our partners, maybe a used bowling trophy from the thrift store down the street. I know, it’s terribly un-coordinated, but, hey, you’re doing it to protect your child’s health, not for the prize, right?

Nice newsletter, I followed a link from it to read this article. I have looked at the calendar and will try to do as many tips as I can. Luckily, I do many of these tips already.

Let’s all keep in mind to reduce our childrens’ exposure to pesticides. That includes lice treatments, our pets’ flea collars and flea dip, and yard sprays meant to kill weeds and bugs.

I am new to this website (found it from The Soft Landing website) so I am wondering if you put out a monthly calendar.  I love this October one and would love to see more.

This is our first formal calendar, but we’ve received such a great response to it that we are discussing doing them more often.

Thanks for checking it out!

I’ve seen your logo somewhere, but can’t place it.  Glad to have found your site, though!  You have great resources and information, I’ll be sure to pass your site along to friends.  The October calendar is great and I’ve just used #6 as an excuse to ask our daycare to stop wrapping our cloth diapers in individual plastic bags and just use the wet bag I provided [I’ve made so many other requests, I felt bad asking for another change]. Thanks for the motivation and other tips too!
