Peer Pressure

I'd like to believe I'm an independent thinker - but I know I'm not. Like many others, I live a life of comparison. I regularly ask myself, am I doing better or am I doing worse than the random strangers or well-known friends and colleagues I deal with every day. I often feel like I'm doing worse. I have an ingrained instinct for feelings of inadequacy and guilt. And, I know I’m not the only one.
We are heavily influenced by those around us, no matter how hard we fight or deny it. And a new article in The Wall Street Journal emphasizes how peer pressure and guilt influence how people behave. According to the article, The Secret to Turning Consumers Green,
“Studies dating back at least three decades clearly show the power of social norms. We tend to ascribe our actions to more high-minded motives, or to practical concerns about money. But at its core, our behavior often boils down to that old mantra: Monkey see, monkey do.”
And, this is exactly why once you understand the risks of toxic exposures, you should talk about your own personal life actions and model the way every chance you get. You don't have to get into the details of the science. You don't have to get preachy. Just lead by example and talk about how many other people you know are doing it.
It's that simple. YOU are a force for change - just by being who you are, and sharing it.
Peer pressure can be a very beneficial thing. Use it to the advantage of the cause. Be subtle, be kind, be powerful. Your life - no matter where you are in the journey to healthier living - is an example to others. YOU are important to the movement.
What do you think of using peer pressure for positive change? Do you think it can work? Let’s talk about it – and other ideas for raising a ruckus. Join the Twitter Party on Thursday, October 21, 2010 at 6 PM PDT
