Healthy Child:

May is Pregnancy Awareness Month!

Pregnancy Awareness Month (PAM) was established in 2008 by author, holistic lifestyle expert, and Healthy Child Board member Anna Getty and producer & mompreneur Alisa Donner.

Their mission is to empower, inspire and build a community of support for expectant women and families. Anna explains, “[m]y life was altered not only by the birth of my daughter, but by the experience and choices I made as I prepared my body, mind and spirit to become pregnant and the incredible inward journey of pregnancy itself.

In PAM we have adopted the tagline: ‘Motherhood Begins Now®,’ and I really believe that. I took that message to heart before I actually became pregnant as a way to prepare my mind, body and household for this fabulous moment of creativity, and my life literally turned upside down, for the better.”

The month-long campaign focuses on four key initiatives: education, exercise, nutrition & wellness and nurture. Join this amazing community!

Create a Healthy Nursery

Do you have an iPhone? If so, you’ll want to download this new iPhone app. It's called 'Peaceful Nursery: Healthy, Green Tips for Creating Your Baby's Room.' Co-authors of the book 'The Peaceful Nursery' Laura Forbes Carlin and Alison Forbes - offer expectant parents everything you need to know about decorating and stocking a healthy, green baby nursery right at your fingertips.

The Peaceful Nursery App features a quick and easy shopping checklist of all the right items to buy for the nursery, along with tips about what to avoid, and an explanation of how to make the healthiest, greenest choice. A paint guide, tips on everything from helping baby sleep to uses of color, and a section on how to arrange your nursery are also included, along with video insights from the app’s co-authors.

The Peaceful Nursery App has versions compatible with iPhone 3 and iPhone 4, as well as iPod Touch. The app for iPhone is available from Apple’s App Store on iPhone and iPod touch or here.

Pregnancy Issues in the News

  • Study links prenatal BPA exposure to infant wheezing. Researchers have reported a link between exposure to BPA among mothers in early pregnancy and wheezing in their infants later on, a development that could add to a rising tide of health concerns over the widely used chemical.
  • Stillbirths tied to secondhand smoke. Pregnant women who live or work with smokers may be at slightly higher risk of having a stillbirth, suggests a study that adds to evidence that even secondhand smoke can harm unborn babies.
  • More Pregnant Women Dying in CA, Says Study. In California, a disturbing new report shows that more pregnant women are dying than before, due to increased obesity rates, more Cesarean sections, older mothers, and limited health care access. Part of the rise is also attributed to better data reporting methods. Read more at Mother Jones.

A Mom -
I think your comment is completely valid and reproductive rights don’t have anything to do with the Healthy Child mission. I’ve edited that section out.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention!

I am so disappointed to find an article link like the 3rd one under the pregnancy news.  I am hoping it was a mistake, something that was overlooked by the editor, how sad for this to be linked from Heathy CHILD, Healthy World.  All those poor souls who didn’t get a chance to be healthy.  All life is a gift no matter what the circumstances.  This article could have provided the facts about pregnancy risks without comparing the medical statistics to the safety of abortion, how ridiculous.

These are some great links!
