Take On the April Eat Healthy Challenge!
Healthy Child
Wednesday, March 24, 2010
Join our on-line Health eFamily all month-long as we focus on fast, frugal, fun, and eco-friendly ways to Eat Healthy! Get up to speed on the issues by reading A Clean Plate: Choosing, Eating, and Storing Healthier Food, Chapter 3 of the Healthy Child Book and visiting our Eat Healthy on-line guide.
Then, challenge yourself to try something new or adopt a new habit. Maybe try having Meatless Mondays, one meal that’s made from all local foods, ditching any un-safe plastics, or banning the can (i.e. eat fresh, frozen and dried foods because most canned foods have BPA in the lining). The options are nearly endless – find something that works for you!
Tell us what you’re doing to Eat Healthy and learn from others by joining us on-line. Here are all the ways you can engage with the Health eFamily during April. (Participate in any of these activities to win great prizes!)*
Twitter
All month long on Twitter, tell us how you and your family eat healthy by using the hashtag #eathealthy. Some examples include:
• I #eathealthy by choosing organic food.
• I #eathealthy by using glass instead of plastic.
• Organic fruit salad is my favorite recipe to #eathealthy.
• You can't #eathealthy with canned foods - they have BPA in their lining.
Just remember to include #eathealthy so we'll see it! We’ll be compiling the best tips and tweets and sharing them on our blog and Facebook, so our whole community can learn more.
Parents Play Date Twitter Party Thursday, April 1st at 6/9 pm PST/EST
No doubt you’ve heard the saying “You are what you eat.” We’ve grown up learning that a healthy diet includes servings from the four food groups and the food pyramid, but it’s also about what’s NOT on our plates - namely, artificial additives, pesticides, hormones, antibiotics and genetically modified food - that make us healthy. Unfortunately, when even sugary breakfast cereals tout they’re “Low Fat” and contain “Whole-Grain,” it’s hard to decipher which foods really are healthy. Join our on-line Health eFamily as we discuss the basics of eating healthy: learn label basics, budget shopping tips, and much more. Share your stories and tricks and learn from everyone else’s.
Safer Products Twitter Party Thursday, April 8th at 6/9 pm PST/EST
2009 was a wakeup call in terms of the danger of BPA and hopefully 2010 will be when we begin to appreciate that what we serve our meals on is almost as important as what's in them. Join our on-line Health eFamily as we discuss healthier products to use to prepare, serve and store food to eat healthy.
Healthy Home Party Twitter Party Thursday, April 15th at 6/9 pm PST/EST
Our Healthy Home Party Kits have been a big success. Moms across the country are hosting parties and educating their family, friends, and neighbors about creating cleaner, greener, safer environments for children.
Join our on-line Health eFamily to learn how to host a party to learn how to eat healthy, tweet with others who have, or ask any unanswered questions from a past party you hosted. Since this month we’re focusing on eating healthy, we’ll also be discussing ideas for hosting a Healthy Home Party as a dinner party. Whether everyone brings a dish or you cook simple foods together, eating together and discussing the issues as table talk is a great way to introduce healthy home ideas to friends and family.
Healthy Earth Party April 22nd at 6/9 pm PST/EST
Eating healthy is the most important thing you can do for your body and the planet. Choosing options like organic, local, homemade, or vegetarian is healthiest for us and for the environment too. We’ll learn about why organic isn’t really as expensive as you’d think, the importance of eating locally whenever possible, how organic farming benefits the environment, and more ways you can join the food revolution to protect our health and the environment.
