Substitute baking soda for fabric softener.  Just ½ cup to ¾ cup baking soda will leave clothes soft and fresh smelling.

Fabric softeners and laundry detergents are among the most highly scented products, imparting fragrance to clothing and other laundry. Using fragranced products excessively can cause chemicals to concentrate in the air to levels that can become hazardous or act as asthma triggers, especially in children because their airways are more sensitive than those of adults.
