Welcome Parent Ambassadors!

Healthy Child
Thursday, June 10, 2010

Many parents have no idea that there are toxics in their own home and that they've been unwittingly exposing their children to them. It's not that they don't care -- they just haven't come across this information in a format or tone that they understand or feel empowered to act on. These are the parents that Healthy Child has not reached, yet.

We know we cannot do it alone, and just as we’ve historically relied on scientific experts to craft our message and celebrities to help promote awareness, we've enlisted an elite group of Parent Ambassadors. Our Parent Ambassadors are digital parents who will help guide our outreach and expand our community, develop our programs to be the most valuable and innovative for parents, and build the movement to create healthier environments for all children.

We'd like to share some of their initial thoughts about working with us and show you how they're already helping spread the word and build the movement!

Ciaran Blumenfeld lists eight things she's done since learning about the 5 Easy Steps. She does note that those things may look like a huge undertaking but:

"it’s been a gradual process, and not one that has put an enormous strain on us. I believe that we have all seen great benefits from the things we have changed. My son has fewer asthma attacks. Our home still smells good. We’re proud of our efforts. We’re also far from perfect. We still eat drive through food on occasion, I’m not cloth diapering my two yr old (though I hope for him to be out of diapers all together soon!). The point is that every small change we’ve been able to make a part of our daily routines, and that of our kid’s, makes a difference. Theirs is a message and a mission I am proud to be a part of and help spread."

She also mentions:

"there are so few organizations I would pile extra work on my plate for at this point, but Healthy Child, Healthy World is an exception. Because it is so excellent. These people are really making a difference, one small step at a time. I’m also blown away by the good company I am in as an Ambassador for Healthy Child Healthy World. What a great group!"

In her announcement, Maria Mora aka Maria Melee, says she's been worried about getting cancer for years and that it might be too late for her (NO, it's not Maria!!!) but that she still has the ability to protect her two young sons. She writes:

"I believe that the most irresponsible thing I can do is simply not give a damn. What can be more irresponsible than saying, 'Everything causes cancer, so why should I care?' I’m not going to give them spinach and pomegranate juice every day. I’m not going to follow the latest cancer-prevention fad. But I am going to do my part to be aware of chemicals and toxins that are proven to do harm. It isn’t about being super mom. It isn’t about being crunchy. It isn’t about trying to be better than you because trust me, not a day goes by that I don’t sigh and trudge for a moment because I feel less than another mother, another woman. This is a decision I’m making for my children.

Christine Koh has been living a green lifestyle for over a decade and "and it's been truly gratifying to see green living embraced in a mainstream way in the last several years. I'm thus honored to be part of a similarly impassioned group of parent ambassadors for Healthy Child Healthy World."

In addition to sharing our message with her readers, Whitney Wingerd says she's looking forward to learning more about eliminating toxics herself, admitting that although she's made steps towards natural living, she's pretty middle-of-the-road. She believes strongly in our mission:

"To me, it’s about making small, daily changes. Global change starts with one family, and over the last few years, I’ve been trying to make subtle changes in my family’s living on a daily basis. The world isn’t what it was when we were once kids. There are chemicals everywhere and they are harmful to our children."

Readers of Janet Dean`s blog Green Mom Review may already be familiar with us because she says she's linked to us many times but are you familiar with HER site? GMR features "products and services we actually think are great alternatives to conventional ones and we ONLY write about things we think are awesome."

Ever the social media expert, Michelle Lamar spread the word of her becoming a Parent Ambassador on three sites! She put it on her personal blog, her business' and submitted it to the the modern newswire service, Pitch Engine.

Derek Markham makes no bones about it - he says that protecting your family is a stereotypically male duty and that despite women typically being responsible for the health of the children, he thinks it's pretty manly to protect your kids from "things in the environment, such as toxic chemicals in our food, water, personal care and household cleaners." That's why he decided to "man up" when we asked him to become a Parent Ambassador, because "fathers are also role models and defenders of kids, and we ought to know about the things that may affect our children and do what we can to keep them safe."

He admits he was initially reluctant to be one of only two dads in a team of 20 parents but realized, "it is well within my role as defender of my family, and that I might just possibly have something to add from a father’s point of view."
