I survived the years of extreme sleep deprivation due to fussy babies, but I’m still burning the candle at both ends (and sometimes in the middle, too) trying to juggle all the demands of family and work and life. Strong, black coffee is one of my main fuel sources propelling me through the day, but I dread the afternoon crash.
While I love a quick run to wake me up in the morning (if I get up early enough), and I try to squeeze in some fresh air and a brief walk in the afternoon, I could certainly use some other natural energy boosters in my toolbox.
Enter Mom Energy.
Internationally-renowned registered dietician, Ashley Koff, recently joined forces with fitness trainer to the stars, Kathy Kaehler, to write a great new book that helps moms rejuvenate naturally. And, don’t we need it! They offer some key themes that include tips Healthy Child promotes all the time, like avoiding GMOs, choosing organic, and eating foods in their whole form. We knew these were great ways to avoid toxic exposures, but who knew it could boost your energy, too? Hooray!
Healthy Child’s very own Executive Director, Rachel Lincoln Sarnoff, offered her personal advice for inclusion in the book:
"On a personal level, I feel better when the energy that I access in my work on a daily basis - ie, my mind - is balanced by the energy that I access for exercise - my body. By balancing the two of them, I feel I can access the energy that nourishes my spirit. After I became a mom, I needed exercise in so much more of a crucial way. Whereas I used to exercise for the physical effects, I found that as a mother I looked to it for the mental benefits. Especially when you have three kids in the house at one time (!), it becomes difficult to feel like you are completing a task - let alone the 20 that you set out for yourself each day. I found that if I took an hour to walk the baby in the stroller and a few squats along the way, I felt a sense of accomplishment throughout the day that helped me battle postpartum blues and, later, just general mom-frustration!"
Great advice, Rachel! Thinking about it made me curious about how our Healthy Child community copes, too. So, I asked our Facebook friends to share their tips:
- Kimberly: Vitamins! And lots of water!
- Rebecca: Lots of fruits and veggies, sunshine, and a positive attitude! Coffee helps :-)
- Miciah: eating healthy, walking, trying to get enough sleep but most importantly, alone time and time with my hubby
- Paola: Going for long, intense bike rides. Exercise is an awesome way to keep your energy levels up
- Bren: Eat healthy, drink lots of water, and nap when the kids are napping....even if it is only a quick cat nap it helps.
- Marianne: Making time for my creativity.
- Jennifer: What is this word energy you talk of? It sounds vaguely familiar...
- Emily: Good diet, lots of water, and a cup of coffee every day! I do 1/2 caff. But it's the ritual of it that gets me going. I also find that a good routine and structure help the day go more smoothly for us all.
- Stephanie: Nutrition is key here...Eating lots of veggies...lots of variety and combining it with lean proteins and fruits. Don't forget water water water! Forgo processed junk...its just junk and only makes you more tired. Try to implement physical activity...I love to play with my kids! We have family dance time which gets you giggling too.

Of course I need an an energy boost now and again - I am a working mother of two (or three depending on the husband’s mood that day!). Natural things I do to boost my energy include:
*Exercise - nothing gets me moving like a good jog. Its rare that I come home and sit on the couch after a jog. I feel like I wasted that entire time just to inhale calories so then whola I’m up and cleaning and doing laundry and other things I hate. It helps me be productive too!
*Apples - seriously. I’m not sure what it is about them, although I don’t get full, they give me some kind of natural fuel to get moving. Even better when dipped in Nutella and peanut butter. Mmmmm.
*Vitamins - I feel sluggish if its been more than a few days without taking my multi.
*All natural drinks. If you are a 5 hour energy guzzler PLEASE STOP! I’ve found a new product that I love - SPARK. Try it! Advocare’s vitamin line is all natural and full of goodies. Read about it on their website and even make direct orders through Advocare.
