It's the kind of book that no matter where you are on the organic, green learning curve, you will learn something invaluable. Every chapter has great information and quick tips to get you started.

— Karla, Living a Whole Life, September 15th, 2009

As a mother, everything changes and the connection between protecting our children’s health and their future’s planet becomes a priority. I turned to Healthy Child Healthy World to help me make our home as green and non-toxic as possible. Everything I needed to know was in this book!

— Nicole Richie, August 13th, 2009

Healthy Child Healthy World: Creating a Cleaner, Greener, Safer Home by Christopher Gavigan is one of those books that every parent should have.

— Stefanie, Focus Organic, July 1st, 2009

I was surprised at how easy and simple some of the ideas were for minimizing and eliminating pests in the household without resorting to the more toxic chemical solutions. I’m telling you, this book covers everything!

— Amelia, The Mom Crowd, June 22nd, 2009

The book also offers DIY tips and recipes and resources on taking the next step. Healthy Child, Healthy World is an easy educational read that will surely become a useful reference guide pulled off the shelf many times in my home.

The Green Phone Booth, June 15th, 2009

What I especially like is that the book addresses every step of development – from preparing for baby to their food, toys, clothing, etc. when they are older. Advice for adults (i.e. cleaning, beauty products, etc.) and even pets (“raising a green pet”) is also included in this valuable book.

Mom in the City, June 24th, 2009

One of the things I really appreciated was the suggestion in the book that you do not need to try to do everything right away. You can work your way through the things you are ready for and make progress at your own pace. I think that’s a very important thing to remember. Going green doesn’t have to be an instant or frustrating solution.

Green Sahm, April 21st, 2009

I’d call this a must-read for all parents and those interested in helping to keep the earth as green as possible, and our kids as healthy as possible in the process.

— Susan, Upscale Baby Blog, June 12th, 2009

I love that it presents tips, suggestions, and resources for greener choices at various price points. Again, when I've researched green options online I'm often left feeling frustrated, like I can't afford to protect my family from all the toxins in our world. Honestly? I can't. But Healthy Child Healthy World taught me quite a few ways to make a less toxic, greener choice without breaking the bank. In today's volatile economy I think most of us appreciate that information!

— Tiffany, Lattes and Life, June 18th, 2009

These days, before running out to acquire things they don’t need, many parents are thinking about health, the environment, and creating a minimal footprint. Healthy Child offers an excellent how-to manual for creating a healthy, toxin-free home.

— Kimberly Jordan Allen, EcoChick.com, June 4th, 2009

Healthy Child Healthy World arms the reader with information – first to educate and raise awareness; and then, constructively presenting steps that can be taken to create a healthier environment for adults and even more importantly… our children. With the amount of research and data available, it would be easy enough to become overwhelmed. Instead, the author along with a host of experts and celebrity contributors explain even small and/or gradual changes can offer your family a healthier life.

Pregnancy.org, June 1st, 2009

I really love the book and have passed it on to many friends, the response is so positive. Several people have commented on it's simplicity and thorough information, more practical and less overwhelming.

— Carolyn Murphy, Model, February 23rd, 2009

I went from being completely overwhelmed to feeling empowered because there is a lot more we CAN do personally within our home. If you’ve been reading my blog, you’ll know I’m not really into being “greener” but being SAFER for our family. I firmly believe Gavin’s autism was triggered by environmental factors and I am on a mission to rid my home of as much of those toxins as I possibly can. You have to start small and not try to tackle everything at once.

— Emily Hulling, Recovering Gavin, June 2nd, 2008

I am physician and in all of my years of training, I was never taught the valuable information I found in this book. Please don't expect your pediatricians to know about this either... Gavigan does an excellent job of breaking down the science so that is clear to the reader. SO that we understand WHY it is important...This is an excellent book that has changed my life..buy it, read it- and educate your family on how to live a cleaner, healthier life. (And maybe you can teach YOUR doctor some of these things too!)

— Dr. Natalia Rodriguez Goldman, Amazon Review, September 30th, 2008
That, ultimately, may be the strongest message of Gavigan’s book: individuals can make the world a better place–without giving up so many of the comforts that savvy marketers have convinced us we need.
— Christa Miller, A Vocational Duality, March 28, 2008
Unlike many other "green living" books, this one focuses beyond the basics of raising an eco-healthy baby (cloth diapers, organic baby food and FSC certified wood toys) and encourages building a healthy, environmentally friendly community for your children in which they are active participants.
— Jessica Drummond, Moms Living Green, July 28, 2008
Gavigan doesn't imply we all live in a ticking time bomb set to unleash toxins that can cause autism, allergies, cancer and asthma. However, the book reminds us of a growing body of research pointing to unseen threats from exposures to chemicals in everyday products like cleaning supplies, cosmetics, furnishings, plastics, and some foods and toys as contributing to these aliments. Gavigan is confident that virtually every home could be made safer, cleaner and greener with simple changes.
MarketWatch, July 15, 2008

I'm the type of gal that in the past would pour bottle upon bottle of Liquid Plumber down pretty much anything that had a hole, even the toilet! But after doing some snooping around, I'm thinking that ain't such a good idea anymore! I've tried a few different home remedies like soda, non-chlorine bleach, hot vinegar and just plain old boiling water. None of those really worked all that well. Then I read Healthy Child, Healthy World! If you have not read this book - go out and buy it immediately! I won't go into detail and spoil it for those that actually will read it - but - they suggested 1 cup vinegar and 1 cup baking soda…let it fizz…then pour boiling water down the drain. Voila! It worked instantly!

Natural Nuggets, July 12, 2008
I got some great ideas about cleaning with better products, how to reduce the amount of trash I create each day, what foods are best to get organic, and lots more! I've learned how to read ingredients better on products, little tips on how to conserve energy and other great little things we can do to make our homes safer and cleaner.
— Jenni Bobo, Books Are Meant to Be Read!, July 9, 2008

Contrary to what Kermit may believe, being green is easy. And the sooner we teach our kids how to be green, the simpler it will become.amous moms and dads like Meryl Streep, Toby Maguire, Keri Russell, and Kate Hudson are just a few of the celeb folks sharing their own family tips on raising eco–friendly tots in the new book Healthy Child Healthy World: Creating a Cleaner, Greener, Safer Home.

Lil Sugar, April 15, 2008

This is a "go-to" guide for modern parents struggling to raise healthy children in a climate of BPA, phlalates, parabens, asthma, allergies, lead, and the list goes on. With all of the things that we have recently been told we should shield our children from, it's a wonder that we haven't been told to raise our kids in a bubble (but would we be able to purchase a large enough plastic bubble that didn't contain BPA or PVC?). With chapters on preparing a nursery, cleaning, food, beauty products, toys, gardening and yards, air and water, pets, and home improvement, you will surely find answers to any questions you may have about the threat du jour.

The Full Mommy, June 13, 2008

Working in collaboration with renowned pediatricians and environmental watchdog groups, Healthy Child, Healthy World; Creating a Cleaner, Greener, Safer Home by Christopher Gavigan is a book full of eye-opening data. Heartfelt contributions by Gwyneth Paltrow, Brooke Shields, Tom Hanks and many other other notable parents make this an even easier and more inspiring read.

Splendora, The Fabulous Girlfriend Network, April 28, 2008

The book seems to be the next "must have" for new, expecting and experienced parents. I particularly like that this book covers all the bases of providing a healthy, safe and eco-friendly home and products. From pregnancy to toys, food, cleaning and more, this book takes a look at it all, gives the facts and provides the tips and advice to do it yourself. It not only appeals to me, but several celebrities and experts endorse this book as the one to buy.

— Robin Horrigan , Parenting Project with MassLive.com, April 16, 2008

I loved this book and I especially like how each chapter focuses on specific topics - from cleaning agents, skincare items, organic foods, pregnancy, etc. sharing solutions and tips on how we can avoid potentially harmful chemicals to better protect both ourselves, our children, and our environment. This format will enable readers to quickly use this book again and again as a wonderful reference book and resource. You'll also love how they tie in tips, strategies, and choices about how to live a greener lifestyle from an amazing plethora of celebrity parents. These mini parentblog tidbits are totally fun to read and lighten up the material as well.

Classy Mommy Product Reviews, June, 2008

This book features solutions for all stages of parenting, from pregnancy and beyond. It contains much of the same material as other green guides, but is written specifically for parents, so it includes child-specific data and recommendations that are missing elsewhere. Topics covered include preparing for baby, cleaning house, healthy food, body care, toys, clothing, garden, clean water and air, and pets--all written with a child in mind.

— Debra Lynne Dadd, Debra's Bookstore, June, 2008

The environment is your environment. It’s where you live and where your children play; it is the air you breathe and the water you drink. It is home. Healthy Child Healthy World is an excellent resource for any parent looking to keep their home healthy, safe and green for themselves, for their children, and for the planet.

— John Adams, Founding Director, Natural Resources Defense Council, May, 2008

The tone is unrelentingly positive throughout, and suggestions have some heft to them: This isn't just "write a letter to the editor," but a how-to on writing that letter, covering all the right points, and getting it published.

— Katharine Wroth, Grist Blog, June 3, 2008

The foundation of the book is built on a common sense approach, providing simple steps for creating minor changes which result in major payoffs. Christopher reassures parents that it’s never too late to start - you have more control over this situation than you think . . .

The Soft Landing Blog, May 17, 2008

As a mother of a cancer survivor, Healthy Child Healthy World: Creating a Cleaner, Greener, Safer Home is the most complete and authoritative guide for parents to learn about creating a healthy environment for children's health and our earth. Christopher Gavigan has written a masterpiece with a wealth of information. This is a MUST HAVE book for anyone wanting to create a Healthy and non toxic environment for their family.

— Teri Morin, Co-Founder, Green Hope Foundation, May 8, 2008

What a wonderful book! It is incredibly thorough and with a clear, positive voice that empowers the reader with all the information necessary to create a healthy home and life. Christopher Gavigan and the parent contributions make it very personal and down to earth.

— Laura Forbes Carlin, Author, The Peaceful Nursery,

1 Mother 2 Another, April 30, 2008

One thing I appreciate about the book is that each chapter covers the impacts of our choices on the environment. I know that the idea of being green and changing family patterns and habits can be overwhelming but the book emphasizes that any choice to go greener is a step in the right direction.

— Amelia, The Mom Crowd, April 21, 2008

Extensive information in an easy-to-read format. A great gift for all expectant parents on your list.

— Sara Snow, Green Lifestyle Expert and TV Host, “Get Fresh with Sara Snow”, April 29, 2008

If you're a parent, there is no more vital book on the market...Pick up a copy, and I guarantee you won't be able to put it down until you've read every last word.

Petite Planet, April 28, 2008

I know what I’ll be giving as baby gifts this year!

Warming Blog, April 28, 2008

I LOVE your new book. I think its so important, so well done, and I've already bought it as a gift for several new moms. It’s a must have for any one who cares about the health of their children and the world that we are living in.

— Jane Buckingham, Author of “Modern Girl's Guide to Motherhood”, columnist for the New York Times Syndicate, and President of The Intelligence Group, April 2008

This book is an impressive accomplishment. I was particularly impressed by the way you threaded the line between green hype and medical uncertainty. I am an MD who firmly believes in the green revolution, but I often see it conveyed in terms that are scientifically illiterate if not magical. Again and again you phrased your way thoughtfully through a subject so it was healthy and green, but still medically and scientifically valid.

— Dr. Richard L. Crews, Psychiatrist, Educator, and Former President of Columbia Pacific University , April 2008

So here’s my recommendation, if you are looking for ways to change your lifestyle, this book is a good one start with :)

— Erin, Seeking God Knows What Blog, April 24, 2008

...Where most books of this sort leave me feeling wretched and panicked by the time I've finished reading them ("I've poisoned my child!"), this book left me feeling empowered.

— J. Meegan, Amazon.com Reviews, April 23, 2008

Healthy Child Healthy World proves you can stop dreaming of leading a more natural, healthy life and start living it -- without sacrificing comfort, safety or pleasure! This a fun, uplifting book with dozens of ultra simple steps to detox your workplace, home, school and life. Christopher Gavigan has written an essential book for parents, care-givers or anyone interested in positive solutions to today's most pervasive health threats.

— Judith Robinson, Director of Programs, Environmental Health Fund, April 16, 2008

Like many busy parents, we are always on the lookout for quick, easy-to-implement tips that will help make our home healthier and safer for our children, and more in tune with the environment. An all-in-one resource of tips, information, resources and inspiration, Healthy Child Healthy World is the essential do-it-yourself guide for families of all sizes and ages to adopt a greener lifestyle.

— Kit Crawford and Gary Erickson, Owners of Clif Bar & Company, April 2008

If I could, I would carry it around in my purse.

— jmama, Green Mamma, April 15, 2008

A truly useful guide to safer pregnancy, cleaning, eating, self-care products, and greener yards and gardens -- pithy, practical recommendations.

— Michael Lerner, President of Commonweal, April 2008

Gavigan covers all the greenssentials without overwhelming you, and prepares you to make smart changes with tips and tools."

Vital Juice Moms, April 11, 2008

The best book ever written to help parents detoxify and green their households is Healthy Child Healthy World (Dutton) by Christopher Gavigan.

— E. Jean, Elle Magazine, May 2008

Thank you to Healthy Child Healthy World for providing such an exhaustively researched guide to navigating the hazards to our children's health both inside and outside our homes. The personal insights woven throughout the text provide the sense that, as parents, we're all in this together. There is something we all can do to help make our world healthier for the next generation. Step one: Read this book!

— Mary Brune, Co-founder & Director of Making Our Milk Safe (MOMS), April 2008

This book is a great guide to creating a healthy, nontoxic, and environmentally sound home. It shares easy clear steps on how to choose and use cleaning products, foods, home furnishings and much more.

— Jessica Jenson, Low Impact Living, April 12, 2008

LOVE the book...you did an amazing job!! I am so very impressed. Classy, informative, warm...you really nailed it!

— Rita Wilson, April, 2008

GO BUY THIS BOOK! Seriously! I don’t have an official Green and Clean Mom book award but if I did this book would win it. This book is just what every Green and Clean Mom needs because it doesn’t make you feel like you have to be perfect or do everything but it lays it all out there.

Green and Clean Mom, April 13, 2008

Many of the topics have been in the news lately - lead in children's toys, toxic baby bottles and the dangers in our food supply are just a few recent headlines that come to mind. This book goes deeper than a three-minute segment on the evening news, and explains why each of these things are a danger, and more importantly, what to do about it.

Gotcha Baby Blog, March 26, 2008

Christopher uses a fresh, accessible tone to educate, encourage, inspire, and even entertain throughout Healthy Child Healthy World. It’s the perfect guide for parents-to-be, educators, caretakers, and anyone interested in learning simple behavioral modifications that are invaluable in promoting and enjoying toxic-free living.

— Amanda Chawansky, Perfect Organics Blog, April 10, 2008

From cleaning supplies to home renovations, Gavigan manages to break things down into manageable, easy-to-follow solutions, so you can always do the right thing—for your child and your planet.

Planet Green, April 9, 2008

Someone out there finally answered all of my questions! I think I may have actually found my 'Going Green Bible.' Healthy Child, Healthy World by Christopher Gavin isn't a feel good self-help book, it's a book that when you read it as a mama you cringe at many of the things you read and you change things, even small things that same day.

In Te Domine, March 27, 2008

I was pleasantly surprised to discover a book that explains how and why the little changes we can make in the way we go about our day-to-day lives can truly affect the health and lives of our children right now.  This book isn't expecting us to all trade in our minivans for a Prius, start composting, grow our own foods AND spin flax into linen to make our children's clothes. This book is about people in the real world. REAL moms and dads. Those of us who would like to make the world safe and cleaner for our kids but don't know how. Or at least feel overwhelmed by the enormity of it all.

Sugar Mommy, April 1, 2008

The book does a pretty good job of emphasizing how to make small changes. One step at a time. And to really just be more aware of our surroundings. It touches on everything from indoor air pollutants to organic crib mattresses to safer carpet choices.

Life As I Know It, April 2, 2008

New parents or families just beginning the journey of investigating "Going Green" would probably benefit most from Healthy Child Healthy World, but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to someone already on that path. Much of it is "preaching to the choir", if you're already committed, but there's bound to be some new information here, for even the most seasoned granola-head.

The Crib Chick, April 2008

I really enjoyed this book. I'm going to keep it on my desk as a quick reference so I can keep my family safe. As the book says, you don't have to change everything in your life, but making a few small changes can make a big difference in your families health. Whatever I can do to reduce some of these risks, I'm all for it. Healthy Child Healthy World is a must read.

The Bean Blog, April 3, 2008

Not only does the book detail ways for parents to toxin-proof their child's world, it offers up advice from celebrity parents, such as Meryl Streep, Gwyneth Paltrow, Brooke Shields, Courtney Cox, Kate Hudson and more.

Dallas Child Blog, April 4, 2008

Healthy Child Healthy World is a great resource to help parents learn how to live a simpler, greener life. The format is user friendly, and the appendix includes an extensive list of “Healthy Resources”. If you are wondering how to create a healthy lifestyle and non-toxic environment for your family, this book is right for you.

— Jennifer Lance, Eco Child's Play - Green Parenting for Nontoxic, Healthy Homes, April 8, 2008

It's a quick read and very direct. I finished in in two evenings. Simple, dramatic changes in the products you use around your house and yard can make a big impact on the health of your family and the environment. I am glad to have a guide to making the quickest, most effective changes.

A Wrung Sponge, April 2008

The good thing about this book is that it gives you answers and solutions along with the warnings and information. You'll feel empowered rather than scared. There are easy-to-follow steps and the book encourages you to go slowly so as not to feel overwhelmed.

So A Blond Walks Into A Review, April 2008

In spite of already feeling eco-aware, I still learned a lot from this book. I mean, I knew a a couple ways to get rid of ants without pesticides, but I had no idea they hated paprika. What a simple solution! What I found most useful of all was the resources appendix. I already use most of the brands listed in the personal care and cleaning products section, but now I have information about where to find VOC-free paint and which are the best HEPA vacuums. It also lists many websites and books for further research.

The Hidden Side of a Leaf, April 2008

If the growth of the EcoMoms network's any indication, having a baby often acts as a catalyst for people to lead cleaner, greener lives. And a new book "Healthy Child Healthy World: Creating a Greener, Cleaner Safe Home" helps parents do just that.

Los Angeles Times Blog, April 2008

Most definitely, Healthy Child Healthy World sheds some much-needed light on the prevalence of harmful substances in our food and environment, and offers steps we can take to provide a healthier world for our children. It's a must on every conscious parent's bookshelf.

— Tere, A Mom, A Blog, and the Life In-Between, April 2, 2008

One of the things I love best about this book is the way the material is presented. An item is evaluated (such as nail polish, car seats, cleaning products, or regular milk), an explanation is given regarding the potentially harmful environmental factors, and then simple solutions or alternatives are suggested. You are left feeling aware, educated and empowered.

— Jennifer Applin, Managing the MotherLoad, April 1, 2008

Recalling the foolishness of earlier generations who "knew" smoking was dangerous, yet puffed away until officials finally said to quit, he urges actively avoiding such potentially detrimental chemicals as phthalates and bisphenol-A instead of waiting for formal warnings from the feds.

Fit Pregnancy, March 2008

This book is an easy read and one that will be picked up again and again. It carries perhaps more weight than other books on green parenting that I have read because it’s author is the CEO of The Healthy Child, Healthy World organization, which is dedicated to educating parents about environmental hazards.

Mom Blog Network, March 2008

I want to let you know I read your new book and think its absolutely wonderful. Such a perfect tone. So much valuable information. Perfect balance between alerting and educating, but not relying on scare tactics. I am even more honored to be included!

— Myra Goodman, Founder, Earthbound Farms, March 2008

I LOVE this book! I have read many books and this is the most comprehensive and complete resource to date. It is written in a clear and easy to read format listing websites that have saved me hours of my own research. I can't do everything at once but "Healthy Child Healthy World" shows me where I can start to make my home safer for my children and more responsible to the environment.

— Stacey Funt, MD, Physician, Good Samaritan Hospital - Co-Founder and Co-chair of the Green Care Committee, Mother of four year old twins, April 2008

While Healthy Child Healthy World is rather child-focused, my non-Mom co-worker found the book both fascinating (She copied the "Under Sink Makeover") and discouraging ("WHAT?! No microwave popcorn!?"). More importantly it got us talking about the things we were doing, and wanted to do, exchanging ideas and experiences.

Gift of Green, March 2008

"Of all the books and products I have reviewed over the past few years, I have to say Healthy Child Healthy World has the potential to have the biggest impact on my life."

Crazy MomCat, March 2008

Each chapter offers tips to make each area of life a little greener: preparing for baby; safer cleaning throughout the house; choosing, cooking and storing healthier foods; natural body care; safer toys, gear and clothing and so much more, all without breaking the bank. It’s kind of like having a whole neighborhood of green moms right at your fingertips and available 24-7!

Green Mom Finds, March 2008

Indeed, the beauty of his book is that it contains solutions both large and small, and he remains ever mindful of the fact that most of his readers will be budget-constrained. Rather than beat you over the head with eco-guilt, Gavigan presents facts about manufacturers and chemicals, then provides alternatives.

— Christa Miller, Motherhood and Freelancing, March 2008

Gavigan keeps the average budget and time constraints in mind as he suggests simple changes a person can make to the way they clean, organize their house, or purchase toys. Even the garden outside the house gets a makeover in order to maximize healthy living space.

Mother Talk, March 2008

If you are pregnant, or just plain new (as in living under a rock) to eco-living this book is for you. This book has a great introduction to all things environmentally friendly, specifically cleaning solutions, no or low VOC paint for baby nurseries and food.

Here are my Top 3 favorite parts of the book:

1. Easy, budget-friendly cleaners
2. Eco-friendly gardening and yards
3. Resources for everything, including safe art supplies.

The Chunky Purse Blog, March 2008

This excellent green-living guide contains simple solutions and daily steps for changing the way we live through its mission of "prevention through education."

Library Journal, March 2008

This is a book that EVERY single parent needs to read…before they read the What to Expect Books or even Dr. Sears books. More parents NEED to know about the dangers their children are being exposed to every day. Parents concerned about the issues covered in this book are not alarmists or extremists…the danger is there and it is real. This book is my new #1 baby shower gift.

It just covers so much good information I am in awe…like a collection of the “best of the best” that parents need to know. It has also many cut out cheat sheets for green cleaners, fruits and veggies best eaten organic, and a list detailing each plastic and which ones are the most toxic.

Nature Moms Blog, March 2008

One surefire way to motivate adults to make green living choices is to explain that their children’s health depends on it. Healthy Child shows parents the most natural, sustainable, and creative ways to raise a child — explaining how to make a super-safe finger paint at home, choose the safest types of fish for dinner, garden with the kids, and more. Teaming top scientists and medical experts with contributing celebs (Gwyneth Paltrow, Tobey Maguire, and Tom Hanks, to name a few). Healthy Child is an easy, requisite read for parents and parents-to-be.

Plenty, April/May 2008

85. The percentage of dirt in our homes we bring in on our shoes. That dirt harbors lead dust, bacteria, pesticides, and other pollutants, according to Healthy Child, Healthy World: Creating a Cleaner, Greener, Safer Home (new from Dutton), by the CEO of Healthy, Healthy World, a nonprofit environmental group.

Easy fix: Ditch shoes before entering the house – it will cut lead dust, for example, by 60 percent.

The book has other eco-friendly tips on topics ranging from pregnancy to toys, plus essays from green-minded celeb parents such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Courtney Cox.

Things are different today from when I grew up, and it's a lot harder to get kids who are entrenched in their habits to go outside their comfort zones.
