San Angelo, TX
I am Cindy Foley and my daughter is Leigha Foley. Leigha was diagnosed with Wilms Cancer in February, 1990.
She died October 15, 1996. She had a large tumor, totally encapsulated, growing out of her right kidney. The histology was favorable. The cure rate for Wilms was 90 percent. The oncology team asked many questions. They wanted to know if one of her eyes was blue and the other one brown? They asked about birthmarks and our family history. I do not know if this cancer was genetic or non-genetic. I do know that the questions we answered concerning heredity indicated that this cancer was not genetic.
Leigha had a recurrence of the tumor in the same place where it had been before, and it was found in other parts of her abdomen. We had four to five different chemotherapy drugs and radiation. Leigha was clear of cancer for three and a half years. There was another recurrence diagnosed in December 1994. This tumor involved the liver. The oncologists used new chemotherapy drugs. Leigha also experienced an autologous bone marrow transplant. She was clear of cancer this time for eight months. The last reoccurrence was in her liver again. A liver transplant was considered and denied.
We turned to alternative measures. We tried vitamins and minerals and other homeopathic and natureopathic solutions. We worked with a clinical nutritionist. She requested an in-depth background concerning my health while carrying Leigha and, of course, Leigha's background. From the information she received from me, the nutritionist's theory was that the water I had been drinking had something toxic in it and broke the blood barrier while I was carrying Leigha. I had written in the background information about how sick I had been while living in San Angelo, Texas. My family had been ill as well. We drank city water.
Another theory is that my husband came into contact with a chemical while working in the oil field which could have been passed from him to me to Leigha.
One last theory is that I came into contact with something as a teenager in the area where I grew up. Within a 10-mile radius, in a very sparsely populated area, three of us had children with cancer. They are all girls.
I do not know what brought about the cancer in Leigha's body. I only know that she had it, and it was the cause of death, and that I miss her. If we can discover what has caused and is causing cancer in children, then we can remove these toxins and spare other families the pain and suffering we have experienced. We want good to come out of our experience and loss.
