Window Coverings

There are now beautiful new types of window coverings that can do everything from block sunlight and heat, serve as Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) filters, and add natural scents to your room, all made of non-toxic materials.

Older solar shades were made of Polyvinyl chloride plastic (PVC) wrapped around a fiberglass core. They off-gassed VOC’s. The new generation of solar shades, although good for any windows, are especially good for large floor-to-ceiling windows and doors. They are PVC free, block sunlight and heat, have excellent pulley or track systems and/or remote controls, and more…

HCHW advisory Board member William Mcdonough, author of “Cradle to Cradle,” developed a revolutionary solar shade “Ecoveil” which is PVC-free, and totally recyclable.

Other solar shade technologies actually absorb harmful VOC gases and odors by accumulating toxins at the surface of the sun protection fabric, converting them in a catalytic process into harmless substances like water and carbon dioxide! Visit BaKaSave for more information.

Other sustainable natural window coverings include those manufactured from high quality rapidly renewable grasses, reeds, bamboo, palms, hemp or other cellulose fibers. These fibers can be used in whole, part, trimmed, twisted, or braided to create truly unique patterns.

100% organic silk and cotton are also used to create beautiful fabrics for drapes. Multi-layering of sheer fabrics and fully-opaque shades with can create the best options for climate control in your home.
Toxic finishes, chemicals, lacquers or other clear coats are not necessary when care and attention to quality and the inherent properties of the material are realized.

These materials help our planet and are a real delight to our soul as our windows turn into works of art.
