benzophenone

Also Known As:

Benzophenone; Benzoylbenzene; Diphenyl ketone; Diphenylmethanone; Methanone, diphenyl-; Benzoylbenzene; Phenyl ketone

Description

Benzophenone, a white crystal with a rose odor, can be used as a photoinitiator (usually a process in making plastics), a fragrance enhancer, an ultraviolet curing agent, and as a flavor ingredient. It is also used in the manufacture of insecticides, agricultural chemicals, and hypnotics, antihistamines, and other pharmaceuticals, and it is used as an additive in plastics, coatings, and adhesive formulations.

Benzophenone-3 occurs naturally in some flowering plants and protects the plant from harmful UV rays.  Its ability to absorb and scatter UV light make it a candidate for use in lotions and cosmetics as a sunscreen.  It is also used in plastics to help protect the plastic from breaking down in UV light and to protect contents in a plastic container.
