The Family Homestead: Guidelines for Disposal of Household Hazardous Wastes

These can go in the trash

  • solidified paint or adhesive
  • alkaline batteries (only in some locations, check first)

These can go down the drain (in small quantities)

  • water-based cleaners or cleaners that would go down the drain anyway when used (rinse with ample water and don't let products mix in sink or toilet)

These must be disposed of at a hazardous waste facility

  • fuels
  • motor oil and antifreeze (may be accepted at gas stations or auto stores for recycling)
  • pesticides
  • polishes containing petroleum distillates
  • cleaning fluids that are not water based

These are general rules, and specifics may differ from one place to another. Always contact local authorities to be sure. You can find your community's hazardous waste rules and drop-off sites at Earth 911, which allows you to search by zip code.
