What should I look for on the label of my sunscreen? And what ingredients should I avoid?
The best products provide protection from UVA and UVB rays, also known as broad spectrum UV coverage. Make sure your sunscreen is water resistant so it is not removed during sweating or swimming. As a rule, always look for at least 7% zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Check out the Environmental Working Group’s list of recommended sunscreens or visit our marketplace for safe and healthy choices.
Make sure you avoid the following ingredients:
- PABA
- enzophenone (benzophenone-3), homosalate, and octy-methoxycinnamate (octinoxate)
- Oxybenzone Parabens (butyl-, ethyl-, methyl-, and propyl-)
- Padimate-O and Parsol 1789 (Avobenzone)
- Phthalates (often hiding in “fragrance”)
