Health FAQ : Lead

Question:

How can we help prevent lead exposure?

Answer:

Lead is a heavy metal that is highly toxic to children's brains and nervous systems, even at low levels. Preventing lead poisoning is an important part of children's health and is relatively easy to do, once you know how potential exposures can occur. I think you'll find the Health e House section of our website helpful. Lead can be found in toys, paint, and even drinking water pipes. Get the lead out of your home and keep it out. Parents should be especially vigilant during the holiday season because many ornaments and decorations contain lead.

If you suspect your child ha been exposed to lead, consult your physician and request a blood test. Medical tests can determine how much of the metal is present and how to address the problem.
