California Toxic Toys Bill (AB 1108, 2007)
The Breast Cancer Fund joined Environment California in 2007 to co-sponsor the California Toxic Toys bill (AB 1108), authored by Assemblywoman Fiona Ma. This bill, which would ban six types of phthalates (chemicals that make plastic soft) from children's toys, passed the Assembly on June 6 and the Senate on September 4. On October 14th, 2007 Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed the AB 1108.
After three long years, California will become the first state in the country to follow the European Union and many other countries in banning the use of six phthalates in children's products and toys.
We would like to send our sincere appreciation and compliments to Environment California and the Breast Cancer Fund for their support and commitment. We would also like to thank Assemblywoman Fiona Ma, D-San Francisco, for writing AB1108 and prioritizing children’s health issues.
Our Healthy Child Board Member - Dr. Harvey Karp - has been a true champion who helped to support this legislation and we would like to sincerely thank him for the tremendous work. There are others folks that were significant in supporting this legislation – and we offer many many thanks.
